Can I Reuse my Ostomy Pouch?
My Ostomy
Reusing your ostomy bag has always been a complicated topic, a topic of which has never had a black and white answer
While some pouches are designed for multiple uses, other bags are strictly intended for single use only. And in some situations, even if reusage seems possible, it may not be the safest or most comfortable option given the circumstances. We break down the ideal thought process for the age-old question: “Can I Reuse my Ostomy Bag?”
When in Doubt, Consult an NSWOC
An NSWOC (Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence) can help determine the best course of action for your specific situation.

"Can I?” - Is my pouch reusable?
Before we continue, it is important to differentiate the “Can I?” and “Should I?” of this topic.
Drainable Pouches
Drainable pouches are designed to be emptied and reused throughout within their use cycle. This includes many ileostomy and colostomy pouches with an opening at the bottom. These pouches can be emptied multiple times per day before being replaced with a new one.
Closed-End Pouches
Closed-end pouches are designed for single-use only and must be discarded after filling. They cannot be drained and are not intended for reuse. If you’re unsure whether you're using a drainable or closed pouch, our guide on one-piece vs. two-piece systems may help clarify pouch types and features.
Should I?
Even with a drainable system, there are situations where reuse may not be ideal
Hygiene & Infection Concerns
When deciding to reuse a pouch, ostomates must understand the potential risks this may pose. Reusing a pouch beyond its intended wear time can increase exposure to bacteria and increase the chance of odour or leakage.
Wear Time Limitations
Pouching systems have limited wear time due to adhesive breakdown, moisture, oils, and movement. Reusing a bag for longer than its design allows can lead to reduced adhesion, leakage, or skin irritation.
Financial Support
Ostomy supplies can be expensive, and financial pressure is a common reason some ostomates consider extending wear time or reusing components. Luckily, there are a variety of federal and provincial programs to help lift potential financial burdens.
Federal CRA Programs
· Disability Tax Credit (DTC) — Ostomates can be eligible for DTC when a qualified medical practitioner certifies the DTC application, and the CRA approves it.
· Additional CRA benefits – The CRA also offers many other financial benefits that may be applicable to Ostomates

Conclusion
Reusing an ostomy bag rarely has a straightforward decision The choice depends on the capabilities of your bag type and case-by-case evaluation.
To reiterate, cost should never pressure you into reusing equipment in a way that feels unsafe or uncomfortable, especially when there are many federal and provincial programs to help support supply costs.
Ultimately, consulting an NSWOC is the best course of action whenever you are unsure about any topic regarding your ostomy.
