Here are key things to know when choosing a size:
- Measuring the length:
- Using the guide provided, select the belt size
- Place Velcro pad on abdomen on opposite side of Ostomy
- With hand in pocket, attach Velcro
- If struggling to insert hand into pocket due to the angle, consider a longer belt
- If you can just barely attach the Velcro, consider a longer belt
- If Velcro closes but there is a piece not attached, consider a smaller belt
- Measuring the width (height):
- If the belt is too wide it will roll. Err on the side of narrower ie. 16cm
- If more fabric is needed to cover the hernia, consider a 20cm or larger
- Tips & tricks:
- If belt is rolling, it is either too tight or too wide
- If belt buckles at back, consider a narrower belt
- Large abdominal folds or large hernias may benefit from a girdle
- If using a belt with opening, the Velcro is designed to be adjusted beneath the appliance
- Sometimes reversing and having Velcro at the top allows the hernia to have better support or may be easier to adjust
- Fitting by Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) recommended
- Ileostomy and urostomy clients do not require a hernia belt with opening. Colostomy clients may require an opening
- For output to drain, there should be enough space to insert fist between appliance and belt
